A lot of Thai students especially English admirers, would like to know "how to be good at English". According to Joseph Bellafiore, a veteran American linguist, the best way to excel of English is to try to enrich your word power. "The more vocabularies you gain, the better English learner you are," says Bellafiore.เด็กนักเรียนไทยจำนวนมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งคนที่ชอบภาษาอังกฤษล้วนอยากจะทราบ "วิธีการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษให้เก่ง" กันทั้งนั้น โจเซฟ เบลลาฟิโอเร นักภาษาศาสตร์อเมริกันผู้เชียวชาญ กล่าวไว้ว่า วิธีการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษให้เก่งก็คือ จงพยายามเสริมสร้างความรู้ในเรื่องศัพท์ "ยิ่งรู้ศัพท์มากเท่าไหร่ ก็ยิ่งเป็นผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษยิ่งขึ้นเท่านั้น" เบลลาฟิโอเรกล่าว
Wide reading of books, newspapers and magazines gives you a great leap forward to increase your command of words. Since you're interested in getting better marks in English exams, landing a good job in the near future and becoming a person who can speak English fluently, you must start now!
To start with, there are six ways to a better vocabulary :
การอ่านมาก ทั้งหนังสือ หนังสือพิมพ์ และนิตยสารจะทำให้เราก้าวไกลมากในการเพิ่มพูนเสริมสร้างการใช้ศัพท์ ในเมื่อเราสนใจอยากได้คะแนนสอบภาษาอังกฤษสูงๆ อยากได้งานดีๆ ในอนาคตอันใกล้ และอยากเป็นคนที่สามารถพูดอังกฤษคล่อง เราต้องเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่วันนี้ เริ่มต้นทีเดียว ก็มีอยู่ 6 วิธีด้วยกันในอันที่จะทำให้เก่งศัพท์ยิ่งขึ้น

1. Experience : ประสบการณ์
You have to widen your range of experience by firsthand contact with English-speaking people. In a nutshell, you have to try to converse with English speakers-on whatevertopics-whenever you have a chance. Life is the greatest teacher of words and everything else.
เราควรเสริมสร้างเราควรจะเสริมสร้างประสบการณ์ที่มีอยู่ด้วยการติดต่อสื่อสารโดยตรงกับคนที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษ คือ พูดง่ายๆ เราควรจะพยายามสนทนากับคนที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษ ไม่ว่าจะคุยเรื่องอะไรเมื่อไหร่ก็ตามที่เรามีโอกาสชีวิตคือครูคำศัพท์และทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุด

2. Reading : การอ่าน
You must develop your habit of reading English books, newspaper and magazines based o­n interests, hobby, vocation , etc. Reading is o­ne of the chef tools in broadening your background.เราต้องพัฒนานิสัยในการอ่านหนังสือ หนังสือพิมพ์ และนิตยสารที่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษบนพื้นฐานของความสนใจ งานอดิเรก อาชีพ เป็นต้น การอ่านถือว่าเป็นหนึ่งในอุปกรณ์หลักๆ ที่จะเสริมสร้างภูมิหลังให้แก่เรา
3. Dictionary : พจนานุกรม
You should get better acquainted with the contents and arrangements of words in the dictionary. The dictionary is a "must" for every English learner.เราควรจะทำความคุ้นเคยกับเนื้อหาสาระและการเรียงร้อย คำในพจนานุกรมให้ดียิ่งขึ้น พจนานุกรมนั้น "จำเป็น" สำหรับคนที่เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ
4. Notebook : สมุดบันทึกAfter collecting words, you are to keep a neat record of new words in your
notebook. If possible, you should copy the phrase of sentence to illustrate its actual use. And don't forget to check the meaning of every word or sentence you copy.
หลังจากรวบรวมคำศัพท์ เราต้องจดบันทึกคำศัพท์ใหม่ๆ ไว้อย่างเป็นระเบียบในสมุดบันทึกของเราหากเป็นไปได้ให้คัดลอกวลีหรือประโยคที่แสดงถึงวิธีใช้และอย่าลืมตรวจดูความหมายของทุกคำ

5. Word-families or roots : ตระกูลศัพท์หรือรากศัพท์
You should have to study t groups of words that are related in structure and meaning because of prefixes , roots and suffixes. Latin and Greek parents have given us thousand of words in English.
เราต้องศึกษาหมวดหมู่ของคำศัพท์ต่างๆ ที่สัมพันธ์กันในโครงสร้างและความหมายอันเนื่องจากคำเติมหน้า (อุปสรรค) รากศัพท์ และคำต่อท้าย (อาคม) ตระกูลศัพท์ที่มาจากภาษาลาตินและกรีกนั้นได้ให้ศัพท์ในภาษาอังกฤษแก่เรานับพันๆ คำ

6. Word-games : เกมคำศัพท์Just for fun , if you can become a crossword puzzle fan and solve other games that appear in newspapers, magazines, quiz books , etc.
All in all, you have to read , write and speak English as much as you can, in an attempt to excel in English.เพื่อความสนุก หากเราสามารถจะเป็นแฟนเกมปริศนาอักษรไขว้ และไขเกมคำศัพท์อื่นๆ ที่ปรากฏในหนังสือพิมพ์ นิตยสาร หรือเกมปริศนา เป็นต้น
ทั้งนี้และทั้งนั้น เราจะต้องอ่าน เขียนและพูดภาษาอังกฤษให้ได้มากเท่าที่จะมากได้ ในความพยายามที่จะทำให้เก่งอังกฤษ

วิธีพูดภาษาอังกฤษเหมือนฝรั่ง ในสไตล์ของ แอนดรูว์ บิ๊กส์ กฎง่ายๆ10ข้อ(แถมอีก1ข้อ)สำหรับคนไทย เพื่อให้พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้(เหมือนที่ฝรั่งพูด)
ทำไมต้องเหมือนที่ฝรั่งพูด ตัวอย่างที่คนไทยพูด เช่นเมื่อครูเข้าไปในห้องเรียน นักเรียนจะลุกขึ้นยืน แล้วพูดว่า"Good morning" ครูจะตอบว่า"Good morning"
นักเรียนพูดต่อว่า"How are you" ครูตอบว่า"Fine thanks,And you"
นักเรียนทุกคนตอบว่า "Fine thanks." แล้วนั่งลง
ทั้งหมดข้งบนนั้น ฝรั่งอย่างแอนดรูว์ บิ๊กส์ บอกว่า นอกจากเด็กปัญญาอ่อนแล้ว ไม่มีใครพูดภาษาอังกฤษแบบนี้ในโลกที่สหรัฐอเมริกา ถ้าจะถามว่า"คุณสบายดีไหม" เขาใช้ประโยคนี้"How are you doing?"คนอังกฤษใช้คำว่า"How are you going?"
ดังนั้น เขาจึงสรุปให้เรารู้ว่า ภาษาอังกฤษที่คุณเรียนจากตำรา ไม่เหมือนภาษาอังกฤษที่คุณเจอในชีวิตจริง แอนดรูว์ บิ๊กส์ ใช้ประสบการณ์ของตัวเอง
ตั้งกฎขึ้นมา 10 ข้อ(แถมอีก 1 ข้อ) เพื่อมาแนะนำให้คนไทยพูดภาษาอังกฤษเหมือนที่ฝรั่งพูด

ในกฎแต่ละข้อ มีคำแนะนำ เหตุผลพร้อมตัวอย่างนำมาเล่าได้อย่างสนุกสนาน และหยิกคนไทยได้แสบๆคันๆพอสมควร

กฎ 10 ข้อ(แถมอีก 1 ข้อ) ของแอนดรูว์ บิ๊กส์ มีดังนี้

1.RULE NUMBER o­nE - FORGET THE RULES(ลืมกฎซะเถอะ)
การพูด ไม่ใช่การเขียน ถ้าคุณจดจ่ออยู่กับเรื่องไวยากรณ์มากเกินไป คุณจะลืมเรื่องอื่นไปทันที การพูดคือ การสื่อสาร ดังนั้น กฎข้อแรกคือ ให้ลืมกฎ แล้วพูดไปเลย อ้าว!ถ้าพูดผิดล่ะ ก็ต้องอ่านกฎข้อ 2
2.RULE NUMBER TWO - MAKE MISTAKES(จงพูดผิด)
การพูดผิดคือบทเรียนที่เยี่ยมมาก ควรจะทำบ่อย และปล่อยให้เป็นธรรมชาติ เมื่อฝรั่งฟังใครพูดผิด เขามักจะแก้ให้ทันที เหมือนกับคนไทย เมื่อได้ยินฝรั่งพูดภาษาไทยผิด ก็จะบอกคำที่ถูกให้ ถ้าคำที่พูดผิดมันชวนขำ ใครก็ต้องหัวเราะ แต่เชื่อเถอะว่ามันไม่ใช่การหัวเราะเยาะ มันแค่ขำเท่านั้น คุณควรจะหัวเราะตามไป ครั้งต่อไปคุณจะจดจำได้และไม่พูดผิดอีกเลย
3.RULE NUMBER THREE - DON'T TRANSLATE(ห้ามแปลตรงตัว)
เมื่อคุณพูดภาษาไทย คุณคิดเป็นภาษาไทย เมื่อคุณพูดอังกฤษ ให้คิดเป็นอังกฤษ แต่ถ้ากลัวว่าทำอย่างนั้นแล้วจะพูดผิด ให้กลับไปอ่านกฎข้อ 2 ในเรื่องนี้ แอนดรูว์ บิ๊กส์ ยกตัวอย่าง 9 อันดับของการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษยอดแย่ของค่ายเทปชื่อดังมาให้ดูด้วย อย่างเช่น BLACK HEAD มันแปลว่า "สิวหัวดำ" น่ะ คุณเคยรู้บ้างไหม
4.RULE NUMBER FOUR - KEEP IT SIMPLE(ใช้ภาษาแบบง่ายๆ)
จุดประสงค์การพูดคือ ต้องการสื่อความหมายให้เข้าใจกัน เพราะฉนั้น ต้องใช้ศัพท์ที่อีกฝ่ายเข้าใจได้ง่าย ยิ่งง่ายยิ่งดีครับ
5.RULE NUMBER FIVE - COULD YOU PLEASE SLOW DOWN?(กรุณาพูดช้าๆหน่อย)
เป็นเรื่องจริงที่ว่า ฝรั่งบางคนพูดเร็ว บางคนพูดไม่ชัดอีกต่างหาก ปัญหานี้ควรทำอย่างไร ท่องประโยคนี้ให้ขึ้นใจเลยครับ
"Excuse me. Could you please slow down?"
ข้อสังเกตในการออกเสียง โปรดระวัง ถ้าไม่ชัดเจน ฝรั่งจะฟังเป็น Kiss me ถ้าคุณเป็นผู้หญิง แย่เลย
วิธีง่ายๆ ให้นึกถึงตัว X กับตัว Q ก็จะได้ X-Q-SMEE = Excuse me ออกเสียงตอนสุดท้ายเป็น "หมี" และ"ด๋าว"
6.RULE NUMBER SIX - LELAX(ทำตัวสบายๆ)
หายใจให้ลึก แล้วนึกว่าตัวเองลอยได้และยิ้ม เมื่อร่างกายของคุณรู้สึกสบาย คุณจะพูดได้คล่อง คิดได้ง่าย
7.RULE NUMBER SEVEN - LISTEN AND COPY(ฟังแล้วเลียนแบบ)

"Now I understand. I cannot get food from man because I am deep black color and dirty, although a pigeon is white."

There was once a huckster who kept an ass, and when he heard that some cheap salt was being sold at the seaside, he drove his ass there to buy some. After having loaded the ass with as much salt as it could carry, the huckster drove him home alongside a slippery ledge of rock, until the ass accidentally fell into the river below.

There were a goose and a stork living at a big pond. They were close friends and always looked for food together. One day while the two birds were walking along the pond, there was a heron flying passed them. "Friends, there is another pond over there. It is full of shrimps, shells, crabs and fish," said the heron.

So, the goose and the stork flew to the pond which the heron had told them about. At the pond, there was really a lot of food. The goose ate a lot of food while the stork ate just enough to fill himself. "We rarely find a place which is full of food like this. Why do you eat so little?" the goose asked his friend. Oh, I'm full. If I eat too much, I'm afraid that I cannot fly back," answered the stork. "But I can eat a lot more," the goose said and went on eating.

At the moment, there was a hunter who came by and saw the two birds. The hunter immediately aimed his arrow at the goose and the stork. By chance, the stork saw the hunter. It cried out to warn the goose before it flew away. The goose who had eaten too much could not fly. It was finally shot by the hunter.

The goose ate a lot of food while the stork ate just enough to fill himself. "We rarely find a place which is full of food like this. Why do you eat so little?" the goose asked his friend. Oh, I'm full. If I eat too much, I'm afraid that I cannot fly back," answered the stork.

"But I can eat a lot more," the goose said and went on eating. At the moment, there was a hunter who came by and saw the two birds. The hunter immediately aimed his arrow at the goose and the stork. By chance, the stork saw the hunter. It cried out to warn the goose before it flew away. The goose who had eaten too much could not fly. It was finally shot by the hunter.

นิทานอีสปเรื่องชายชรากับลาโง่ (The Old Man and The Silly Donkey)

The Old Man and The Silly Donkey

A long time ago, there was an old man who had a donkey and a puppy. The donkey lived in a good stable and had very good food to eat. But the man made him do hard work everyday. The puppy lived in the house doing nothing. It liked to jump and sit on the old man's lap and it liked to lick the man's face. The old man would laugh joyfully and fed the puppy with cake and milk.  

The donkey saw this and was jealous. The donkey began to compare himself with the puppy.
"I have to work very hard while the puppy plays all the time," the donkey thought. "If I behave the same way, perhaps the old man may like me too," the donkey thought. So the next morning, while the old man was eating his breakfast, the donkey walked into the house. He ran around the table and tried to lick the old man's face. As the donkey was bigger than the puppy, he knocked over and broke a jug full of water and a cup of honey. The old man was very angry. He picked up a big stick and hit the donkey. The silly donkey ran away in pain. The old man punished the donkey by not giving him any food. He had to stand in the sun and rain the whole day. "What a silly donkey I am!" From now, I will not do this again so that I will not be punished," he said to himself.

นานมาแล้ว มีชายชราคนหนึ่งเลี้ยงลาและลูกสุนัขไว้อย่างละตัว ลาถูกจัดให้อยู่ในคอกที่ดี และมีอาหารดีๆ กินแต่ชายชราก็ให้มันทำงานมากมายทุกวัน

The puppy lived in the house doing nothing. It liked to jump and sit on the old man's lap and it liked to lick the man's face. The old man would laugh joyfully and fed the puppy with cake and milk.
ส่วนลูกสุนัขอาศัยอยู่ในบ้าน โดยที่ไม่ต้องทำอะไรเลย ลูกสุนัขมักกระโดดขึ้นไปนั่งบนตักของชายชราแล้วชอบใช้ลิ้นเลียหน้าของเขาชายชราจะหัวเราะชอบใจ แล้วให้ขนมเค้กและนมกับลูกสุนัข

เจ้าลายืนมองเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในบ้านด้วยความริษยา มันเริ่มเปรียบเทียบตัวเองกับลูกสุนัข "ฉันต้องทำงานหนักในขณะที่เจ้านั่นเอาแต่เล่นสนุก" มันคิดในใจ "ถ้าฉันทำกับนายอย่างนั้นบ้าง นายก็คงจะชอบใจเช่นกัน" มันคิดต่อ

So the next morning, while the old man was eating his breakfast, the donkey walked into the house. He ran around the table and tried to lick the old man's face.
ดังนั้นในเช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น ขณะที่ชายชรากำลังกินอาหารเช้าอยู่เจ้าลาก็รีบเดินตรงเข้าไปในบ้าน มันวิ่งไปรอบๆ โต๊ะ แล้วพยายามตะกายเอาลิ้นเลียใบหน้าของชายชรา

As the donkey was bigger than the puppy, he knocked over and broke a jug full of water and a cup of honey.
แต่เพราะลาตัวใหญ่กว่าลูกสุนัข มันจึงชนเหยือกน้ำและถ้วยบรรจุน้ำผึ้งตกลงมาแตก

The old man was very angry. He picked up a big stick and hit the donkey. The silly donkey ran away in pain. The old man punished the donkey by not giving him any food. He had to stand in the sun and rain the whole day. "What a silly donkey I am!" From now, I will not do this again so that I will not be punished," he said to himself.
ชายชราโกรธมาก เขาจึงไปหยิบไม้เรียวอันโตมาตีเจ้าลาตัวนั้น เจ้าลาโง่วิ่งหนีด้วยความเจ็บปวด มันยังถูกชายชราลงโทษโดยไม่ได้กินอาหาร และต้องยืนตากแดดตากฝนอยู่นอกคอกตลอดวัน "ข้าช่างเป็นลาที่โง่เขลาอะไรอย่างนี้ ต่อไปข้าจะไม่ทำเช่นนี้อีกจะได้ไม่ต้องถูกลงโทษแบบนี้" มันบอกกับตัวเอง

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า
